It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Thomas Collins, who died peacefully on January 23, 2025, at the age of 80. Joe was born in Yonkers, New York, on January 26, 1944, to John and Rose Collins. He was the third of four children. In 1952, his family moved to Los Angeles, where Joe spent much of his childhood.
A proud and dedicated serviceman, Joe honorably served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. His time in the military shaped much of his later life, instilling in him a sense of duty and commitment. After his discharge, he returned to Los Angeles, where he went on to own and operate several Shell oil service stations in the area.
In 1968, Joe moved to the Kern River Valley, where he became a partner in C&R Machine Shop. In 1978, he established S&J Auto, a business he proudly owned and operated for the next 35 years.
Joe was involved in his community, particularly through his active membership in organizations such as the VFW Post 7665, the American Legion, and BPOE Lodge 2358. He was known for his generosity, whether it was building award-winning parade floats or riding his restored tractors in local parades, always with a smile and a spirit of service.
Joe’s dedication to his family and his community was evident in every aspect of his life. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Anna Collins; daughter, Shelia (Craig) Maxwell; son, Joseph Jr.; sister, Dorothy (Jim) Gregg; and brothers, John (Frances) and Richard Collins. He also leaves behind four grandchildren—Jeremiah, Jessica, Chess, and Dylan—and seven great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
A graveside service will be held on February 5, 2025, at 10:45 AM at the Bakersfield National Cemetery, 30338 E. Bear Mountain Blvd., Arvin, CA. The procession will depart from Lake Isabella Valley Mortuary at 8:30 AM for those who would like to join. A Celebration of Life will follow at 2:00 PM at the VFW, 2811 Nugget Ave., Lake Isabella, CA.
Joe Collins was a man of integrity, hard work, and dedication, and his legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to be touched by his warmth and generosity.
