The Kern Valley varsity basketball team was back in action this past week in HDL matchups. They hosted Bishop and Mammoth where they would split these games. They beat Mammoth, but lost to Bishop in a close battle.
The win over Mammoth saw the Broncs take control at the start then hold on to claim the victory. The Broncs broke from the gate quickly as they stifled Mammoth at the beginning of the game. Kern Valley scored 10 points in the first quarter. The defense clamped down on their opponent allowing just one made free throw. To put the score at 10-1 as the horn sounded.
In the second, both teams were able to find the basket and combined to score 26 points. The Broncs dropped in 15 points, while Bishop added 11 to their score. When the first half came to a close, Kern Valley was holding a 25-12 cushion as they went to the locker room.
Coming out of the break it was an identical scoring quarter as the second, Kern Valley poured in another 15 points. Bishop matched their previous total by scoring 11 points. The third quarter ended with the Broncs comfortably ahead 40-23. It was them the Huskies tried to make a comeback. With most of the Kern Valley starters watching the action, Mammoth closed the gap and made the game just that, a game. Mammoth scored 16 points to get their total to 39, while the Broncs added nine points to collect the 10-point victory.
Leading the way for the Broncs was Aiden Madden with 19 points. This included draining a three-point shot. He was followed closely by Joey Galvan with 17 points. Nien of his points came from hitting three times from behind the three-point arc. Bryce Smoot scored four points, while Carson Parks added three points to the Kern Valley total. Jacob Redenius, Zane Carver, and Daniel Hinkey each scored two points in the contest.
Nine Broncs delivered at least one assist in the game. They were led by Madden who dished out five assists. Parks recorded three assists, while Zane Carver handed out a pair of assists. Redenius, Maddox Beaury, Jeffrey Clark, Smoot, Hinkey, and Gilber Bernal each had one assist for the Broncs.
Turning to the defensive side of the ball, Carver pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. He was followed by Smoot who grabbed five boards. Bernal finished with four rebounds, while Madden and Hinkey were credited with three rebounds apiece. Redenius and J. Galvan each had two boards, while Beaury and Parks each finished with one rebound. Clark and J. Galvan each recorded a block versus Mammoth. Smoot led the Kern Valley squad in steals with five. J. Galvan and Carver recorded four steals, while Parks had three. Madden and Redenius collected one steal apiece for the Broncs.
When Bishop came to town, the Broncs knew they would have to play at their best. They played very well, but in the end the squad from Bishop left with a two-point win over the Broncs. The final score was 38-36.
The Broncos of Bishop jumped out to an early lead as they scored 18 points to begin the game. Kern Valley managed just seven points and trailed by 11 heading into the second quarter. The scoring was much closer in this quarter. The Broncs scored 11 points, while Bishop would add 12 points to their total. When the buzzer sounded to end the first half, the teams went to the break with the scoreboard reading visitors 30, the home town Broncs were sitting at 18.
Coming out of the locker room, the Broncs defense took control and allowed their opponent to three points in the third. The Kern Valley offense was able to get closer as they scored eight points. With the score a 33-26 the two teams headed to the final quarter of action. The Kern Valley defense continued to limit their opponent in the scoring department. This quarter they allowed just five points. The Broncs offense continued to inch closer, but in the end, they would come up just a tad short. They scored 10 points to create the final score.
Two of the Broncs were able to score in double figures. They would score 25 of the teams 36 points. Madden was the top Kern Valley scorer with 14 points. He would connect once from behind the three-point arc. Shiloh Galvan hit twice from long distance as he finished with 11 points. Clark and Carver would each score four points, while Bernal closed out the scoring for the Broncs by draining a three-point shot. S. Galvan and Smoot shared the team lead in assists with two apiece. Madden, Carver, Hinkey, and Parks had one assist apiece in the game.
Carver pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Smoot grabbed four boards, while J. Galvan finished with three rebounds. Madden, Hinkey, and Bernal would each have a pair of rebounds for the Broncs. S. Galvan and Clark would wrap up the board work with one rebound apiece. Madden and Carver each recorded a block in the game. The Galvan brothers shared the team lead in steals with three apiece. Madden finished with a pair of steals, while Carver had one.
The Broncs currently have an overall record of 6-12 and a league mark of 4-5. They went to Boron on Tuesday and will be on the road to Desert on Friday.
